Essay

Another Earth is a 2011 science fiction-drama film that was directed by Mike Cahill, starring Brit Marling and William Mapother.

This science fiction-drama is about a young, brilliant 17-year old woman, Rhoda. Rhoda was on her way to the start of a great and successful life after being accepted into MIT. In celebration, her and her friends consumed alcohol, and she recklessly drove home drunk. Little did she know that that decision would change the course of her entire life. While drunkenly driving she became distracted by an announcement from the radio talking about a recently discovered Earth-like planet coming in contact with the Earth's orbit. This distraction led her to a collision with the other main character, John, and his family, killing everyone in the vehicle except for John.

After serving her juvenile prison sentence, Rhoda began her new life as a janitor at her old high school. Still struggling with the decision she made that ended John's family, Rhoda attempted suicide, but survived. Meanwhile, more was learned of Earth 2. Earth 2 happened to be a mirror of Earth and the synchronicity of the planets was interrupted when the two planets learned of each other. Rhoda entered an essay contest in hopes of winning a ticket to travel to Earth 2.

In an attempt to meet John in person and apologize, Rhoda traveled to his house. In a fit of nervousness, however, she did not reveal her identity to John and instead claimed she was a cleaning lady, getting her a job cleaning the composer's house weekly. After weeks of cleaning John's house, Rhoda and John develop a close and romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Rhoda discovered that she had won the essay contest, and began to struggle with the idea of whether she should stay or leave, while all at the same time struggling with telling John the truth about her identity.

In terms of tone, the film, in general, gives off a feeling of loneliness and coldness. The cold color scheme of blues, purples and greens really adds to this overall feeling, and creates a great contrast with Rhoda's warm, blonde locks of hair.
