Essay

In the film Interstellar the earth’s crops are being consumed by blight, and the population is in danger. The film follows Cooper, a former NASA pilot who now lives on a farm with his family. Cooper is led to NASA headquarters after he follows a mysterious message left in binary after a dust storm. Cooper learns of a wormhole that has been discovered that leads to possible habitable planets. Cooper leaves his family to lead a mission through the wormhole and search for planets that could sustain life.
The film evaluates ideas of the greater good, what we think is truth, and questioning what you believe. Coopers character has his beliefs challenged when he finds out about a seemingly supernatural message that leads him to the most important event of his lifetime. Cooper later has his trust challenged when he finds out that he had been lied to in order to get him to accept the mission. Cooper’s love for his family is challenged when he has to leave them in order to save them, the love he has for his daughter is the most difficult and in the end is the only thing that saves him and humanity. The film also explores the persistence of life and what people would do to stay alive and keep their species alive.
For this film title I want to use the scenes of Cooper in the multi-dimensional tesseract, it is an important scene that wont give anything away about the film, the scene has Cooper floating through a seemingly infinite dimension with blurred bookshelves in every direction. I think there are great opportunities for text to be incorporated within the blur of infinite lines and directions, along with slow zooming out to show scale. The vastness of space and pioneers floating through it is another idea I could use, along with the representation of gravity through words orbiting images or images orbiting text. I want to use a song from the OST by Hans Zimmer because the sounds give a feeling of floating in space and a sense of urgency but slowly moving.

Exploration/Formulation (Style Board/Examples/Studies)

Exploration idea 1: The titles are stretched to create the lines of the tesseract in the film, the camera follows the lines stretching to reveal the shape of the tesseract. The camera rotates and zooms in to lines to show next title and repeats.

Exploration idea 2: The planets visited in the film are shown orbiting until they line up and text the appears on the planets stretch to create the tesseract in the film
