Maurice Binder and the Bond Series

Maurice Binder

Maurice Binder was a well-established commercial artist and title designer famous for creating the original Bond 007 title sequences. Noticed by the movie’s producers after seeing his work for the movie: The Grass is Greener (1960), he was hired to create Ian Flemming’s movie-book adaptation for the first James Bond movie: Dr. No. Binder created the iconic Bond barrel sequence where white dots move across the screen depicting a gun barrel. There he used stop-frame animation, optical film compositing, and in-camera effects to create the pattern of dots animated after appearing text. Over the years, Binder has contributed to a total of fourteen title sequences for the franchise, mostly known for his use of silhouettes. His last contribution to the series was in 1989 for the movie: Licence to Kill. Afterwards, other title designers such as Robert Brownjohn continued to create title sequences for newer Bond movies, later making the final product that we see today from recent films.
