Michelle Dougherty Presentation

Michelle Dougherty

Michelle Dougherty studied at the Art Center in Pasadena, California to get

her degree in graphic design which led into work with print design and

motion graphics. She has worked for respected companies such as E!

Network, NIKE, and Imaginary Forces where she continues to work to this

day. A few of her works at Imaginary Forces include HBO’s Black Sails and

Boardwalk Empire and also commercial work with clients like Gillete and

Lexus. One of her works, which many people have seen, is the title

sequence to the popular show “Stranger Things” from 2016. In an interview

on the Art of The Title, Dougherty discusses the title concept that was

based off of Stephen King book covers like “The Dead Zone” and “Needful

Things” which give off a suspenseful tone. To the typeface choices, dealing

with whether sarif or san-sarif would make the title a more impactful

composition. The final typeface decision was ITC Benguiat (by Ed

Benguiat) which was based off the Art Nouveau movement.
