Patrick Clair

Patrick Clair is an Australian director, creative director and motion designer based in California. He attended Queensland University of Technology and graduated with an undergraduate. After he got a gig at MTV, but really got his breakthrough with ‘Hungry Beast’.

Now owns a production studio called Antibody and also works with an agency called Elastic. He’s also worked for other companies like Australian Film Television, Adidas, Call of Duty, Bacardi, TedX, HBO, etc. and has won at the Emmy’s and SXSW.

1. Patrick Clair is a great example of what you should do through the whole process of making a title sequence. He talks through the process of how he takes inspiration from whatever is given to him, whether it’s music, the scripts, emotion, or different elements of the show to come up with title sequences that reflect the shows and movies.

2.(True Detective) His first award for best title sequence went to True Detective. He incorporated things like portraits of the characters, snippets of different areas of where the characters lived, other imagery, pollution, fire, light and darkness into his title sequence to reveal what the show was about which was revealing character through location.

3. (Dexter)

-He’s most known for his ability to seamlessly blend strong narratives with communicative design. He cares a lot about the aesthetic.

-He says that story and music is always the most fundamental part of his design process, because it gives him a better understanding of the writing before beginning visual ideas.

-He believes that there’s a deeper purpose to a the story if he manages to create a title sequence that really says something more fundamental about the characters because it gives the viewers a deeper understanding of the characters journey and it also creates emotion.
