Sarah/Kyra: Richard Greenberg

Richard Greenberg

Richard Greenberg is a motion graphics/ main title designer originally from Chicago. He obtained both a BA in industrial design, and a MFA in graphic design. He started R/Greenberg Associates with his brother in 1977, acting as the designer. Greenberg was responsible for the design of many title sequences, including: Superman, Alien, Altered States, Blow Out, The World According to Garp, Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, Dirty Dancing, The Untouchables, Die Hard, and Home Alone. He won a technical Academy Award in 1986, at which point Richard chose to leave R/GA.

In almost all of his film titles, Richard Greenberg’s main focus is on the typography. He tends to make the typography the most interesting thing in the title, whether it is overlapping characters or putting images inside them. The type always seems to be in the foreground and center of his film titles. Greenberg states “An idea has to be pared down to its essentials to really come alive.” His simplicity is what makes him so renowned today.
