Azka Mazher: Inception (2010)

Film Research

While in a dream, Dom Cobbs tries to make a deal with Saito, an immensely powerful and wealthy business magnate.

Cobbs takes Ariadne, a graduate student studying architecture, into a dream to show her how reality can be shifted in dreams and how they're built. He gives her the task of designing three complete dream layer mazes for the Fischer inception job.

Individuals are hooked up to this machine to enter the dream.

An example of how dreams collapse.

A totem is an object that one takes into a dream in order to see if they're in their own reality or not. If they are in someone else's dream, it will behave differently than normal. Cobbs totem is a top. It spins endlessly if he's in another person's dream.

The entire Fischer inception job takes place in an airplane.

Another example of a dream collapsing.

One person stays behind each level to make sure the natives in the dream don't suspect anything.

When you die in a dream you go back to the previous level. This is called a kick.

What happens in the previous level affects the deeper levels. In the dream level before, the characters are in a van that is falling off a cliff, so the gravity in the current dream level is low (as if they're falling).

Essay

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible, inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists must pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea, but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Words to Idea + Thesis Statement

The four levels of text on the 'I' represents the four layers of dreams the characters go through. The 3D letters are meant to immitate buildings, as architecture plays a big role in the movie. The clouds in the background emphasize the building-like feel of the letters and allude to a dream-like state as well.
