Brian Saquinaula : The Pianist (2002)

Essay

The Pianist is a 2002 biographical war drama film produced and directed by Roman Polanski, with a script by Ronald Harwood, and starring Adrien Brody.[5] It is based on the autobiographical book The Pianist (1946), a Holocaust memoir by the Polish-Jewish pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman, a Holocaust survivor.

Words to Idea + Thesis Statement

Dark somber toned WW2 survivor story.

Visual Research (Inspiration Board/Collection)

Here I decided to get screen shots of the movie and make artboards to see what colors to use or textures.

Exploration/Formulation (Style Board/Examples/Studies)

Soundwave Keys for dramatic effects

Letters of compressed font become piano keys. Lines remind of gap between keys. Additional graphic bars and texture could be used to create tone/atmosphere. Fragmentation relates to war torn environments. Letters could appear and disappear (or move) in piano-like rhythm.

Backdrop 1 for movement in a linear motion.

Backdrop 2 to combine with Backdrop 1 to create a more textured and motion filled backdrop.

Story Board

The concept and mood I went with was a somber toned linear movement project.
Emphasizing on the white and black to tie in the "pianist" element of the movie. Along with lines and rectangles to move in throughout the piece. As well as a saturated red color to emphasize the tone of the movie.
