Essay

The story of Robocop starts off in a futuristic Detroit. With the city being overwhelmed by crime, the city makes a deal with Omni Consumer Products to create special robots to replace cops. During a presentation, president Dick Jones unveils the ED-209. The robot malfunctions and kills an executive, allowing Bob Morton to present his own idea. We are introduced to the protagonist of the story Alex Murphy. He’s transferred into a new department and together with his new partner Anne, they pursue the cop-killing criminal, Boddicker. While on the pursuit, they are ambushed and Boddicker and his gang kill Murphy.

After retrieving Murphy’s body, Morton converts Murphy into Robocop. RoboCop is programmed with three prime directives: serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law. Robocop soon runs into one of Boddicker’s crew members and arrests him. He soon investigates the other members. Boddicker then breaks into Morton’s house and reveals that he is working for Jones and kills him. Robocop tracks down Boddicker and his gang and apprends them. Boddicker reveals to him that Jones is behind everything. Robocop then confronts Jones only to be attacked by ED-209. Jones frees Boddicker and they plan to put an end to Robocop. Robocop ultimately kills Boddicker and sets off to expose Jones to the executives. Jones tries to fend off Robocop but is shot and breaks through the glass window and falls to his death. The chairman asks for Robocop’s name in which he responds, “Murphy.”
