Film Research

Black and white film (no color throughout the film) captures the age in scenes of the film that brings you into the time period.

The Lighthouse is described as a psychological thriller/horror film.

Throughout the film they portray various metaphors in mythology. For example when a scene cuts to when a flock of seagulls plucking out the organs of a body resembles the story of Prometheus.

The atmosphere always seems to feel raw and gritty for the reason of William DaFoe and Robert Pattinson tremendous acting skills.

A lot of suspense and heavy feeling is brought to this film for one reason being the menacing sounds that will trigger the audience throughout watching, such as the foghorn blaring.

As the film carries on you can notice the loss of sanity and change in ones character deeper into the film.

Essay

Suspense, gloominess, curiosity, are all just a few words to describe this Horror/Drama film The Lighthouse. The plot of the movie takes place in New England on a random island somewhere between the 1890’s. The film mostly dedicates on showing two lighthouse keepers working at a station together, both stranded on the island because of a bad storm. The film continues on to capture the day to day life of these two lighthouse keepers, to which it shows them working, eating, getting drunk, trading tales/stories, etc. As the days go by though the film seems to display and focus on the two lighthouse keepers that slowly seem to start losing their sanity in which leads to horrific events.

Words to Idea + Thesis Statement

Thesis: Two lighthouse keepers working tough labor at an island where they are stranded, trying to keep from going insane as we live their day to day lives.

Throughout the film there's a bunch of jump shot examples, the opening of the Lighthouse can showcase that perfectly as it transitions shot quickly from a place and time.

Tilting is also another camera movement used heavily on the film wether it be from the bottom view up or sideways.
