Assignment 5: Film Titles
You'll be developing a film title sequence. The objective is to create anticipation and to set the film’s tone. Use Typography and motion to express ideas and create a narrative.
ChatGPT: What is a title sequence?
A film title sequence, also known as an opening credits sequence, is a segment at the beginning of a movie that typically introduces the film's title along with the names of the principal cast, crew members, production companies, and other relevant contributors. The title sequence often includes creative visual and auditory elements that set the tone, style, and mood of the film.
Film title sequences can vary widely in style and complexity, ranging from simple text overlays to elaborate animations, graphics, and special effects. Some title sequences are iconic and memorable, becoming an integral part of the film's identity and contributing to its overall aesthetic appeal.
Title sequences serve several purposes, including establishing the film's artistic vision, providing important information about the production, and engaging the audience from the very beginning. They can also help to immerse viewers in the film's world and prepare them for the story that is about to unfold.
Steps:
4_1: Film Research & Essay
Learn everything you can about the movie (story, message, visual style, color scheme, time period...).
- Movie pick
- Research film (watch, make notes, collect still images...)
- Essay and thesis statement
5_2: Visual Research
Collect materials related to the film, time period or message. This collection will serve as inspiration and source material for the next phase.
- Collect (or create) images/graphics, type studies
- Publish collection to this site (mood/style board)
- Also think about sound. It could just be a musical score, sound effects/noise or a combination of both.
5_3: Exploration/Formulation
This is the phase where you decide on a certain idea or direction. Set yourself certain limitations or boundaries in regards to the visual material you're going to play around with. By combining, manipulating, and experimenting you may find an unexpected, original visual language, style or method.
- Explore ideas/possibilities by experimenting with typography and color or by combing image and type
- Make motion tests in After Effects
- Goal is to define the visual language, (style, elements, type treatment...) for your title sequence.
5_4: Storyboard
- Create and publish your storyboard (plan ahead for the sequence as a whole).
5_5: Production in After Effects
- Keept and open mind during production. React to discoveries or "accidents" you may come across. Consider incorporating these if appropriate.
