The movie starts out by introducing a rivalry between two race drivers, Niki Lauda and James Hunt. In the Formula 3 race, Hunt sees Lauda and asks who he is. Hunt ends up winning the race and Lauda lost because his car stopped after Hunt hitting him during the race.
After the race, Lauda wants money to invest in racing so he asks his father for money but his father disagrees. So Lauda takes out a loan and finds a Formula 1 team.
Later on Hunt gets married to Suzy, a British model, and on the wedding day he finds out that Lauda signed a contract with Ferrari. The reason being that Lauda is a genius with cars. The first Formula 1 race takes event and both Hunt and Lauda are getting ready, Lauda ends up winning the world championship. Suddenly, Hunt becomes aggressive towards his wife because he finds out that he can no longer race and he’s out of the Formula 1 since he has no sponsorship for his team and himself. Suzy leaves him and goes to New York. Hunt drinking more and more. A few moments later, McLaurensigns with Hunt and he is back in the race. Other Formula 1 races happen. Niki Lauda keeps winning and Hunt’s car keeps breaking down. Lauda won in Brazil, South Africa and Spain. Although Hunt won in Spain, he was disqualified because his car was too wide. Lauda continues winning in Monaco and Belgium. Hunt’s car engine sets on fire. He then argues with McLauren about the car and its problem.
Hunt flies to New York to see his wife Suzy. Suzy is cheating on Hunt with Jimmy Burton, a player as he is, adores her unlike Hunt who thought getting married would change him. Instead Hint chooses to keep drinking, smoking and continue infidelity. On the other hand, Lauda gets legally married with Marlene Knaus. It’s a rainy race day in Germany and Lauda wants to cancel the race because he does not want to risk injury. Unfortunately the race is still on and Lauda gets into a car crash during the race and is unable to unbuckle his seat belt. He is left burning in the fire for over a minute in 800+ degrees. Stuck in the hospital, Lauda is fighting for his life while Hunt is winning every race. Lauda returns to race and Hunt wants to apologize to Lauda for continuing the race in the rainy weather and it’s his fault (Hunt’s fault). Hunter feels guilty. On the same day that Lauda returns to race, he wins 4th place in the race.
It’s a final race in Japan and Hunt is scared because of the storm. He wants to cancel the race but the race is still on. Throughout the race, Lauda drops the race because he doesn’t want to risk another car accident. Hunt wins the championship. After the championship, Hunt returned to drugs, girls & sex, and drinking, while Lauda was in peace. James Hunt dies at age 45 due to heart attack. Lauda is not surprised but sad.

Due to an intoxicating racing environment, competitors turn enemies are forced to overcome their sins and realize that the race brings out the worst and best in people.

Motion blur and car meter visualize racing and speed as well as the two cars racing which are the opposites/rivalry. Spider resembles for enemies in the movie. Car tire, mud and fire are materials yet also conclude how the two opposites were no longer against each other.
