Clockwork orange is a film that showcase the life and the moral dilemma that is Alex. Alex leads his gang of droogs to commit various defiling acts such as murder, rape, theft, drug use etc. This movie divides into three acts. The first acts showcase the very escapades of the gang and more specifically develops Alex characters as a person who psychopathic with lack empathy for others. After a crime goes wrong, he is betrayed by his droogs and caught by the police. He is sentenced is to 15 years in prison.
This begins act 2 where he is seen in prison unremorseful of his actions in fact he indulges in the same actions in prison. 2 years in his sentence, he is than presented with the opportunity of leaving early if he were to participate an experimental aversion therapy for rehabilitating criminals. He gladly takes the offer. He is injected with drugs and is forced to watch sex and violence while listening to his favorite composer in till he felt physically sick. Aversion Therapy would prove to be successful but at the cost of his choice and humanity.
Act three begins when he is released from the prison and goes back to his home, He’s welcomed with the shock that his parents will kick him out and sold all of his belongings. He goes to attack the person living in his room but feels physically disgusted that he is unable to move. He then is attacked by hobos that he attacked at the beginning of the film. He saved by a couple of policemen who turn out to be his old droogs. They take him to a forest and beat him and almost drown him. After trying to find help he arrives at a house of one of his former victims. The victim however doesn’t recognize him only in till Alex starts singing the song singing in the rain. He then drugs him and lock him in room blasting it with music. Unable to deal he with the sickening pain he then tries to kill himself. After being subjected to psychological test he no longer experiences pain the sex and violence and at the end he says, "I was cured, all right!”.
There three major themes prevalent in a clockwork orange. The first theme is society vs freedom of choice and whether it is ethical to allow individuals to keep their humanity and the freedom of choice or to take away the humanistic quality in order to make the individual fit societies standard of what’s acceptable. This creates the moral dilemma of whether one should be allowed to make choices of the wrong or to suffer torment to make the right choices. Though he may seem like a disgusting individual it is his choice for him to be the way he is right now. The moral dilemma leads into the next theme which is the necessary evil in human nature. The necessary evil in human nature is needed in order to allow and individual to experience human nature as it was intended which allows freedom of choice and the ability to grow from these choices. The third theme is the interpretation of art in real world situations. as the movie shows art can be used to enhance their outlook of experiencing life and at the same time it is used to hide the reality of the brutal acts that are committed in the film.
