As the protagonists are introduced to Delos while on their way, this logo shows up with interesting colors to represent the 3 worlds available.

As visitors divide into the different worlds of Delos, there are a lot of neutral tones with a few vibrant colors popping out, still representing the different worlds to visit.

The 2 main characters shown getting dressed to visit Westworld. The neutral tones of the world outside of Delos are visible along with the warm and neutral colors of Westworld.

As they first arrive in Westworld, the warm and neutral colors of the world are very clear, with a few vibrant colors on some of the buildings popping out.

The first encounter between the protagonists with the main antagonist, the gunslinger android. As the gunslinger enters the scene the mood instantly changes and Peter ends up killing him.

On their first night, the characters choose to spend time with 2 android women, as opposed to helping the bank during a robbery. This shows the level of choice that visitors in Delos have.

Back outside of Westworld, workers at Delos work on repairing the damages that were made to the gunslinger robot, as well as adding upgrades to it.

Workers in Delos observe and control how androids interact with the patrons through these computers. There are interesting geometric patterns as well as very technological displays.

The first fatality to a malfunctioning android occurs in Medieval World. This picture also shows a stark difference between color schemes in the different worlds, with a strong presence of red.

After a night of drinking, the characters encounter the gunslinger robot once again. He ends up killing John as a part of the malfunctions occurring in the androids. The popping colors in the buildings are still very visible in this scene.

As the gunslinger chases the last remaining protagonist we get a view from his perspective, with very pixelated vision.

Essay

Westworld is a film set in a future where technology such as androids and hovercrafts exists. In this future there exists an amusement park called Delos where patrons can visit worlds in historic settings including middle ages, ancient Rome, and an old-western world. In these worlds patrons are able to experience and do all that they want in a setting created and curated to help them experience it exactly as they wish. This includes workers monitoring them as they spend time in these worlds and programming the androids within the worlds to cater to the patron’s desires. The desires of visitors in Delos can be anything imaginable in the setting. While each world can be full of violence, whether it be sword or gun fights, patrons have no chance of getting harmed due to the programming of the androids. The plot of Westworld revolves around malfunctions occurring with these androids’ programming which allows them to injure patrons.
Westworld follows 2 patrons in Delos who are visiting the western themed world, one of which is a first time visitor. Early on in their experience in the wild west, the newer patron Peter has an encounter with a gunslinger and as soon as the gunslinger enters the scene the mood changes. Peter ends up getting into a quickdraw with the gunslinger and kills him. This is one of the first of many notable interactions that the patrons have with the androids in Westworld. Some of the other notable interactions include acts of violence as well as sexual acts. Being new to the environment of Westworld and the idea of interacting with androids, Peter is very hesitant with any interactions at first, understandably. During his first vacation in Delos, the androids begin to malfunction and harm visitors.
The use of color and music in this film is quite interesting. The concept of the film being so varied in terms of setting allows for a lot of interesting use of color and music. In the main setting outside of Delos, colors are very muted and neutral, giving a very futuristic feel. Within Delos, each world holds a variety of colors, but Westworld was the main focus of the worlds. Westworld holds a very warm color palette with a lot of neutral colors included as well. Occasionally there are bolder colors that stick out such as on the buildings, but they are still warm colors. Music in Westworld was quite interesting because its use as well as lack of use in some scenes was quite noticeable. The music helped develop setting between different scenes, with scenes in Westworld having acoustic sounds, Medieval world having horns, and Roman world having harps. Aside from developing setting, the music helped set the mood, with scenes including androids malfunctioning in some way having very suspenseful sounds. One notable scene where there was a lack of music was with the sword fight in Medieval world, which seemed very out of place considering how much music is used in action scenes in film.
Overall, Westworld was an interesting film, as it combines ideas of a futuristic world with themes included in old western films in a very cohesive and well done manner.
