Watney has returned home to earth. He is starting his new life and in the background you can see the space school that he is new teaching at and he will incorporate what he has learned in space to teach younger generations.
The Martian is a movie that came out in the year 2015. This movie is based off of a book which is also called The Martian and it's by Andy Weir. The movie is a story about what goes wrong with space travel similar to Apollo 11 and Gravity. However, Unlike other space thrillers this movie puts you on the planet of mars where you see Mark Watney, who is played by Matt Damon, Try to survive in this new world after he is mistaken for being dead after a sandstorm. This movie shows you the rough journey Mark Watney goes through to try to successfully come back home.
In the first half of the movie Mark Watney is stuck left on Mars with no way of communication with Earth. As he looks out to the vast redness of mars, which is unlike the blue tones of earth in this movie, he first believes that he is going to die because he is the first human left of a stranded planet with limited resources. He later on realizes that he could use the tools left behind to create resources even though it was not intended to be used in this sort of way. He creates Water, Potatoes, and new types of machines. With all of this he plans to survive for about 4 years until the next Mars mission so those astronauts can pick him up. Back home on earth they are actually able to see his movement and determine that he is still alive.
In the second half Nasa is able to make some kind of communication with Watney and then they try to find a way to bring him home. During this Watney’s team that is still traveling back home has not been told that he is still alive and there are some people at Nasa who believe that they should know later on they finally cave and they tell them and they are devastated that they didn’t try to save him and instead left for there own survival. As Nasa’s attempts to try to save/send watney supplies fail Watney has his own issues to try and fix because one day the hatch to his space station gets destroyed causing his food supply to go back to being finite. This leads one of the heads at nasa to tell the space team who is coming back that they have an option to save Watney themselves but it causes a great risk to them and it will add extra days to their trip back home. They do decide to do it however leading to several days of prep to eventually saving watney and heading back home.
In the end The Martian is a movie about a man trying to survive in a world where he has been left behind. Instead of giving up he decided to do everything he could with his knowledge that he already has to survive long enough till he was saved.
In the Martian Mark Watney has to go through several ordeals to survive after being left stranded on mars. With his degree in Botany and his keen intellect he tries to survive for at least 4 years so the next mars exploration can save come and save him.
