Essay

The film Hermano is set in the slums of Caracas, Venezuela, and it’s based on the story of two different but bonded brothers as their only way out of the life of poverty is through their soccer skills.
They go through many difficult situations such as challenges, gang violence, and disappointment throughout the film. Also, the feeling of dark suspense never disappears. The tone of the film is very depressing, as it opens up with the loud crying abandoned baby in the trash.
Julio, who is the oldest brother, strong, repressed and somber, a gang member, and Daniel, who is the younger, adopted, innocent and naive, are the protagonists of the story. They both play for the neighborhood’s team (Equipo del Barrio) and are amazing when playing together. They have a chance to play professional as they are scouted, but the biggest challenge occurs when an accidental shooting killed their mother. The bond of brotherhood is tested as Daniel must keep his secret from Julio about who murdered their mother as it’s someone from their hood and soccer team that they consider their “family”. Tension between them arises as Julio focuses to serve justice for his mom, while Daniel puts his focus into the professional tryouts, while his secret is eating him alive day by day. Daniel eventually gets offered a contract, but he rejects it unless his brother is also signed. The only way they both can get is if they win the final in their neighborhood tournament. The final game was everything you expect from a championship, and it seemed like it had a final happy ending, until the whistle blew. Julio felt betrayed as he found out Daniel knew who the murderer was. Soon after, Daniel’s secret was eating him up to the point that he thought he had nothing else to loose because he felt the brother bond was broken, so he went after the murderer; their goalkeeper, and ended up killing him on the field. Tension rose and the gang members intervened and held Daniel down, shot and killed him. The film ends with the camera recording the Caracas Futbol Club team lined up in the stadium while ending with Julio being the last man on the line with tears in his eyes as he crosses himself and looks to the sky. Overall, this film is a test of love, brotherhood, and family.
