Daniel Ortigoza: Midsommar (2019)

Film Research

The first thing we see as the movie begins is this picture which essentially is the plot of the whole movie itself. It describes the events that happen in the movie through a single image.

This is the email that Dani receives that makes her worry about her parents and sister and if they’re okay. It is this that Dani also finds out they have all died due to carbon monoxide poisoning, a plan orchestrated from her sister.

This scene depicts Dani’s visions as she is on hallucinogens—psychedelic mushrooms, and this is what she experiences visually, which causes her to become anxious about her surroundings and leads her to get in her head during this trip.

This is the scene in which Dani and the rest of the group finally enters the main village in which the midsommar festivities would be held.

The rock in which the two older people from the commune essentially pledge themselves before jumping off the cliff and committing suicide.

Dani takes and drinks a drink with hallucinogenic properties prior to performing a sacred dance that will decide who will become the may queen that year.

Dani along with the rest of the cult after received the title of May Queen, a very important and valuable position within the cult.

Christian being drugged right before having to be put in a sex ritual with someone else from the cult/commune.

Dani looking into and finding Christian in the middle of the sex ritual and she afterward becomes hysteric.

After Christian falls out from under the effects of the drugging he is put under for the sex “ritual” and runs away from to a farmhouse and finds someone else from the original group of foreigners like this and begins to realize that it is a cult, not before he is blown a substance that paralyzes him.

Christian in a bearskin, being the final sacrifice for the cult—chosen by Dani—with the rest of the sacrifice about to be burned.

The people inside the house are the sacrifices and they’re being burned, while the cult also mimics their screams to mask the sound of their screaming/yelling.

Dani’s grin at the end of the movie, the final scene of the movie, showcasing her finally coming in agreement with the cult's decision and alluding to the fact that she has now joined the cult herself.

Essay

This film begins with a distressed Dani as she receives some disturbing emails from her sister that make her worried for her family, and she calls them but no answer. It then pans out to the family all dead from carbon monoxide poisoning orchestrated from her sister Terri. A grieving Dani doesn’t have many people to turn to except her boyfriend Christian—of which the relationship is already on the rocks. Christian is then tempted to invite a grieving Dani on the trip to Sweden he and his graduate anthropology friends are going to in hopes it makes her feel better. She decides to take him up on the offer and they all head to the Hårgas to observe their midsommar ceremony, which is only held every 90 years.
When they arrive, they all decide to trip on psychedelic mushrooms before they reach the main village, which creates a sort of riff in their preconceived dynamics of what they believe the people from this village to be like—Dani especially. Once they finally enter the village they begin to learn more about this Swedish commune they have decided to stay at. However, as time progresses they begin to take note of the underlying evil/cult-ish tendencies this group has—ex: elderly sacrifices. As they begin to notice these events, they become more wary about the place they’re in and slowly people from the group begin to disappear mysteriously.
As the final days of the ceremony approach, and nearly all of the “outsiders” who came are nowhere to be seen, Dani and Christian become very involved in some of the final events that this group hosts. Dani then takes some tea with hallucinogenic properties and joins the fellow women in the sacred dance to determine who the title of may queen goes to; which inevitably becomes her. Christian is then also drugged and put into a situation where he has to have sex with one of the ladies from the commune as part of a ritual where his thoughts are impaired by the drugs and he isn’t aware of what is going on for the most part.
After these events procure, the final event of the midsommar celebration takes place, and as may queen, Dani is then put in the situation to decide who the final offer will become and she picks a paralyzed Christian. The final part of the movie comes to a close as they place all of the sacrifices in a house—including Christian, and the house filled with the rest of the sacrifices is burned down and the final moment of the film ends with Dani, in an all floral dress smiling, symbolizing her having joined the cult herself.
