Madison Lockwood Coraline (2009)

Film Research

The movie starts off with showing two needle hands creating this doll and letting it fade away through a window. We learn soon after that the doll is representing the main character.

In this scene, you see Coraline discovering a small tiny door in the living area. She finds a button shaped key and opens it, revealing the portal to the other world.

This is the portal that was referred to in a previous screen cap.

This is the scene where Coraline meets her “other family”. As you can see, they’re identical to her real family with the only difference being the black button eyes.

This is one of the many scenes showing how much better this other world is compared to hers. The other world is much more vibrant in color and full of life, which is why Coraline loves it.

This is the scene where the other mother reveals her true form after Coraline declines the offer of sewing buttons into her eyes. She becomes this twisted figure also known as the beldam.

In this scene, Coraline realizes her family is trapped in the other world and she has to go back in order to save them.

Towards the end of the movie, this is where Coraline is at the end of the game. She tricks the other mother into opening the door again while she finds her parents to win the game, and then runs into the portal and shuts the door for good.

Coraline fights with the other mother one last time before destroying the needle hand that followed her and throwing both that and the key down the well.

Essay

Directed by Henry Selick, the film “Coraline” is a 2009 animated dark fantasy based off the book written by Neil Gaiman. Coraline Jones is an eleven-year-old girl with a large personality. She seems to be quite snarky and uptight, but overall is just a curious, adventurous young girl always looking for something new in her boring life. While exploring the new house her family had just moved into, Coraline discovers a secret tiny door, behind which lies a portal to a completely alternate world.

This world closely mimics her world but in many ways is much greater than she could have imagined. Her world is very dull and gray, including the people, whereas this world is full of bright colors and overall is considered a “dream world” for Coraline. In this world, she meets her alternate family or, as they call themselves, her “other mother” and “other father”. They’re almost identical to her real mother and father but are distinguishably different because of the black eyes. The neighbors are also the same way. Her other mother greets her with a large feast for dinner and introduces her to this other world.

Coraline finds herself in love with this new world, but that doesn’t last long after she’s asked to sew buttons into her eyes. The world flips around as she’s now trapped there and turns into this terrifying, unimaginable nightmare. She manages to somehow escape once, but realizes her real family is trapped in the other world with the other mother.

The movie concludes with Coraline racing against time as she tries to not only rescue her parents but rescue the other lost souls in trapped there as well. It’s basically a massive game of hide and seek; but if she runs out of time, she’s trapped forever. Coraline has to grow as an individual and learn how to outsmart the other mother in order to save herself and her family.

Story Board

Overall for this project, I wanted to emphasize the two "worlds" as it is the main focus behind the movie. One side of this world is bright and vibrant colors, and seems to be absolutely perfect. However, the world shifts into this dark, twisted nightmare and I wanted to not only show the two worlds switching throughout the video, but incorporate one into the other by having some color in the black and white and vice versa.
