The movie starts out with the main character Molly Gunn, played by Brittany Murphy, getting ready for her "surprise" birthday party throw by her best friend Ingrid and Huey. As she is getting ready, you can see her apartment is a total mess but it doesn't seem to bother her. This gives us a little look into her care free and fun loving personality. Molly is the daughter of rock legend, Tommy Gunn, who left her all of his fortune when both he and his wife passed in a plane crash. Molly has no care in the world when it comes to her finances, she leaves it up to her fathers accountant to pay her bills and look over her money.
At her party, one of the guests mentions to Molly a wrinkle on her forehead. Molly then rushes to the bathroom to look at this so called wrinkle and this is where she meets Dakota Fanning's character, Ray Schleine. Ray is the daughter of Roma Schleine, a music executive at a record label company. Because Roma spends most of her time working, she never really pays any attention to Ray and her Father is in a coma so she really is on her own. She might be 8 years old, but she acts like she is 28.
Towards the end of the party, Neil, an aspiring musician, plays an original song in the hopes of getting a record label with Roma's record label, with the help of Huey. Neil immediately catches Molly's attention
Molly finds out that her fathers accountant ran off with all of her money, leaving her with absolutely nothing. She then moves in with her friend Ingrid and tries to help Molly get her life back on track. She tries to make Molly sell some of her things to make some money, but she had a little trouble parting with her things. She also forces Molly to get a job to help her pay for 1/3 of the rent, and unfortunately, it doesn't workout.
Molly finally lands a job nannying Ray. They couldn't be more opposite. They spend most of their time together trying to get the other one to either act more like a child, or more like an adult. On Molly's first day she ends up quitting, but after moving out of Ingrild's apartment and in with Huey, she realizes she needs to find a way to pay rent and Ray was her best option. Ray is very organized in the sense that everything has a place, a purpose, and there is no room for fun because there simply is just no point in her eyes. Molly spends most of the time with Ray trying to convince her otherwise. Together they learn a lot from one another and over time Ray opens up to Molly and Molly becomes more responsible and caring towards others.

Molly also happens to meet Neil, an aspiring musician hoping to get a record deal with Roma with the help of Huey. He quickly becomes Molly's lover interest. One day she finds out that her accountant ran off with all of her money never to be seen again. She soon moves in with Ingrid, who tries her best to get Molly to be responsible. She tells Molly she has to pay 1/3 of the rent each month, forcing her to look for a job. She first gets a job at a pricey home furniture store but that falls through so she lands a job nannying for hypochondriac Ray. They couldn't be more opposite in personalities Ray is straight forward, strict, focused and doesn't make time for "fun" because there is simply no point of that to her. Molly is more loosey goosey than she should be. She has no regard for any responsibility and does whatever she thinks would be fun in that moment. Throughout the movie, they find that they both have had a very similar upbringing. Molly's parents died when she was 8 or 9. Ray's mother Roma has no time to pay attention to her daughter and spends all of her time working, while her father is in a coma after suffering a heart attack. Over time Ray starts to open up to Molly, and Molly to Ray. Molly takes her to Coney Island, but unfortunately it wasn't open yet, and Ray was upset that Molly got her hopes up for something. Molly then explains that when her parents died, she ran away to Coney Island and road the tea cup ride until she threw up. She takes her to get a chili dog, and teaches her to dance in the rain if you will. Molly finally tells Ray to go visit her father and it will make him feel better. Unfortunately, he dies the next day. Ray tells Roma to fire Molly, but before Molly leaves she calls Roma out for not know who Ray is at all. She rips up her pay check and storms out. Later Roma calls Molly because Ray ran away, Molly knew exactly where to look. When she finds Ray at the tea cups on Coney Island, she is furious with Molly and starts punching her as hard as she can until she gives into her grief and melts into Molly's arms.
